University Profile: The "Lush Island" of China: Language and Culture in Qingdao
Academic Program This program is led by Dr. Mei Chun, an assistant professor of Chinese language specializing in Chinese literature, at Central Washington University and native of the People’s Republic of China. During your four weeks in China, you’ll be fully immersed in the language and culture through academic study, field trips, and daily life in a Chinese city. All students will take two classes: a Chinese language and a Chinese culture class. This program is open to students at all levels of Chinese, and no prior study of the language is required. For a tentative program schedule and itinerary, please click here. Classes Offered Intensive Chinese Language – 8 credits Chinese language classes will be available at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, making it possible for students with a variety of backgrounds to participate. In each level, your study of Chinese will include oral Chinese, listening comprehension, and comprehensive reading. Classes meet four hours each day, and are taught by faculty from the Oceanic University of China. Your classmates will be both CWU students and other international students participating in the program. You’ll earn 8 credits of FNST (Foreign Studies) credit at the 100, 200, 300, or 400 level, depending on your prior language study. These courses (excluding the 100 level credits) will count as elective credits for Chinese majors at CWU. The 100 level credits can count, however, towards Asia/Pacific Studies majors or minors. For a syllabus, please click here. A Comparative Introduction to Chinese Society and Civilization – 4 credits Dr. Mei Chun will be teaching the 4 credit class, “China and the West, Past and Present: A Comparative Introduction to Chinese Society and Civilization.” This is an intensive introduction to Chinese history, literature, and culture. Its emphasis is on what is “Chinese” about China’s history, government, religions, and literature, and how much the “Chinese past” plays a role in our first-hand observations of contemporary China. For a syllabus, please click here. While in Qingdao, you’ll live in a single-sex, double-occupancy dormitory at the Ocean University of China. Each room is equipped with a telephone, television, private toilet (Western style) air conditioner, wardrobe, and desk. Internet is available in dorms rooms for a small cost (about USD $7).
