It is surrounded by the hills Akagi, Haruna and Myogi. Tamamura is about a two hour's drive from Tokyo. As the birthplace of the ancient culture of eastern Japan, there are many historic sites from the Jomon and Yayoi periods throughout Gunma, and more than 8,000 ancient burial mounds (tumali) have been discovered. Some of these ancient stone monuments indicate the spread of Buddhism to this area in an early period, verifying that this region was one of the major cultural zones in early Japan. Gunma is nationally noted for its abundance of hot springs, with a total of 70 hot spring resorts throughout the prefecture. There are a variety of cultural events, entertainment and shopping, all of which are conveniently available in the nearby cities of Takasaki and Maebashi. University Profile: Gunma Prefectural Women's University Gunma Prefectural Women's University (GPWU) was established in 1980 with the goal of providing young women and adults in the region with opportunities to acquire knowledge both in liberal arts and their major areas of art and literature. Its academic programs emphasize seminars and lecture series. Most of the GPWU buildings on the present campus were built in 1982. They include the 100,000 volume library, the Physical Education Building, the Auditorium, the Education and Research Building, the Student Union Building, the Clubroom House and the Administration Building. The most recent addition is the Fine Arts Studio. GPWU offers Undergraduate Programs in the departments of Japanese Literature, English Literature, Aesthetics & Art History and Liberal Arts. Students can take classes in the following areas: Japanese Literature, Japanese History, English Literature, Aesthetics and Art History and Liberal Arts, as well as in the subjects listed in the table below.
Classes Offered ![]() Exchange students enroll in regular university courses at Gunma Prefectural Women's University, taking all classes in Japanese with Japanese students. (The areas of study are listed above.) There are no special Japanese as a Second Language courses, but exchange students are given one-on-one tutoring for each of their classes. A normal course load during the academic year is 30-40 quarter credits. Please drop by the International Center to see a course catalog (written in Japanese). Students participating in the exchange to Gunma Prefectural Women's University stay in a completely furnished apartment within walking distance of the university. Bedding is provided, and there are ample cooking and laundry facilities. Internet hookups are available in the apartments, and students can order internet service (additional charge). Students accepted to attend Gunma Prefectural Women's University begin studying in April and finish in March of the following year. There is an extended summer recess, as well as a short winter vacation at the end of December. Because only academic year placements are made, all applications are due by n/a - April start only. Students are encouraged to see an advisor and start their applications during Spring or Summer quarters of the year prior to the exchange. Program Fees:

In addition to academic strength, acceptance is based on personal commitment, flexibility, and suitability for study abroad/exchange. 'Current disciplinary record' is defined as an infraction within the last 12 months.
