CWU Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, Japan - Academic Year Programs

Amanda Eastin (l) and Aimee Ratte, studying abroad in Kyoto
students in Kyoto, Japan.

Location

Kyoto University of Foreign Studies (KUFS) is located in the Japanese cultural capital of Kyoto, 700 miles west of Tokyo, in the center of the main island of Honshu. Kyoto, with a population in excess of 1.4 million people, is bounded on three sides by mountains and stands in a fertile plain, amply irrigated by three different major rivers. Two of Japan's most prominent cities, Yamoto and the huge industrial city of Osaka, lie a short distance to the south. With its three great festivals and numerous smaller ones, and its large number of museums and art galleries, Kyoto always has some new and rewarding experience to offer to both the serious students and the casual visitor.

University Profile: Kyoto University of Foreign Studies

Kyoto University of Foreign Studies was founded in 1947 as an institution offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in foreign languages and cultures. In addition to the comprehensive Faculty of Foreign Languages (which offers degrees in English, Spanish, German, French, Chinese, Portuguese and minors in Russian, Dutch, Arabic and Italian), KUFS has departments of Law, Economics and Commerce. Courses are also taught on a wide range of subjects in the fields of history, literature, education and, most importantly, Far Eastern culture. The goal of KUFS is to provide its students not only with linguistic proficiency, but also with a firm basis for the study and appreciation of foreign cultures. The total enrollment is 9,300, including 200 international students.
