NCSA Morelia, Mexico - Summer Programs

Location

Located in the beautiful central highlands of Mexico, Morelia is the capital of the state of Michoacán. It is considered by some to be one of the architectural gems of old Colonial Mexico. Its narrow downtown streets and quiet, comfortable neighborhoods form a welcoming community. Old stone plazas, decorative fountains, and churches located throughout the city are reminders of the region's rich history. Nonetheless, Morelia is also situated halfway between Mexico City and Guadalajara, and it is a deceptively bustling urban center. Residents enjoy all the comforts of city life in a provincial atmosphere. Musical performances, sporting events, museums, and art galleries give the city a lively array of cultural activities, mixing modern-day Mexico with timeless traditions of the past.

University Profile: Universidad Latina de America

Students participating in the Morelia program will attend classes at the Universidad Latina de America (UNLA). UNLA's campus is situated on the outskirts of the city, where students enjoy well-maintained facilities including a student cafeteria, an Internet-connected library, and expansive ecological walkways. The university is a small, liberal arts school of roughly 1,500 students, allowing U.S. students the opportunity to interact, on a daily basis, with other Mexican students.

Classes Offered

What is "migration studies?" As the lives of U.S. and Mexican citizens become increasingly interconnected, communities everywhere are faced with difficult social and economic challenges associated with population movement. In response to these challenges, selected U.S. universities have collaborated with the Universidad Latina de America (UNLA) in Mexico to develop an academic program which explores U.S-Mexican migration through a rotating variety of disciplines, called Migration Studies.

Migration Studies course work is specially designed for students seeking hands-on experience in working with Spanish-speaking populations, both in Mexico and in the U.S. It addresses a growing need for an education that prepares students to live and work in bicultural, bilingual communities.

The Summer Program for Educators is an intensive three-week program designed for 400-level education majors, graduate students in education, and teachers seeking summer coursework that is immediately applicable to their classroom environments.

All students take Spanish language classes, which are worth 2 quarter credits. Students then take the education course being offered by the visiting faculty member.

Housing

Students are placed either alone or with another student in homestay families throughout Morelia. Host families are pre-screened by UNLA's program coordinator and provide students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in Mexican culture. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided in the home.

• Other Info: Program undertakes graduate-level research; undergraduate applications will be considered on an individual basis.
• Good academic standing
• No current disciplinary record
• An interview may be required
