ISEP Universidad Católica del Uruguay, Uruguay - Academic Year Programs

Location

The university is located in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. A port town on the Río Plata, Montevideo is the capital of the MERCOSUR and is mainly populated by European immigrants. The city offers a mild climate, clean air and wonderful beaches. The university is about a 15-minute ride from the downtown area.

University Profile: Universidad Católica Del Uruguay

Founded in 1954, the Jesuit-administered Universidad Católica del Uruguay was recognized as a university in 1985 and continues its tradition of providing personalized education. Drawn from both national as well as international universities, the faculty offers solid undergraduate and graduate coursework, integrating theory and practical experience. International professors frequently visit the university to give lectures and seminars. The university offers a special program for international students, which emphasizes the different aspects of the Spanish language. Student facilities include a library, counseling center and student advisory services, a recently renovated radio studio, a photo lab, computer labs and membership in the Iberoamericana Educational Television Network. Students also have access to a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. Total enrollment: 4,500 students.

Academic Program

Access to higher education in Uruguay depends only upon presentation of a bachillerato, which indicates completion of the secondary school preparatory cycle. There is no entrance exam. The two-year preparatory cycle follows the basic four years of secondary school and is oriented specifically toward the area of study that the student will pursue at the university level. Although most higher education in Uruguay is free, the high cost of living in Montevideo discourages many potential students who come from low-income or rural backgrounds.

The university is composed of facultades, analogous to academic departments in the U.S. system. Facultades, however, tend to be fairly autonomous in their administration. Degrees offered include the licenciado and professional titles. All degrees are awarded upon completion of three to six years of study, depending on the discipline.

Uruguay follows the Southern Hemisphere calendar. Therefore, when applying for an academic year exchange, students will find it beneficial to begin their studies during the U.S. second term. The academic year runs from March to November. Grades awarded are S (Sobre saliente), MB (Muy bueno), B (Bueno), R (Regular), and D (Deficiente); B (Bueno) is the lowest passing mark.

Classes Offered

Academic notes: The faculty of Communication Sciences and the Department of Sociology are favored by international students because of the specific courses they offer. Other strong fields for ISEP students include the Business School and psychology. The special program for foreign students offers three courses per semester: Uruguayan and Latin American History, Uruguayan Literature (selected authors), and Spanish language. Graduate-level programs in business, mercosur law and psychology are open to students with advanced Spanish language proficiency and who meet the entrance requirements.

Language notes: An intensive Spanish-language course is offered during the academic year (65 hours of instruction per semester). Pre-session intensive courses are offered in February and July (not included in ISEP benefits) if the minimum enrollment requirements are met.
